Istanbul, Turkey – UN Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), in cooperation with the UN System Staff College, UN Volunteers and China Institute for South-South Cooperation in Agriculture (CISSCA), UNFPA, Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), is expecting young people from more than 20 countries to take part in “South-South & Triangular Cooperation in Implementing the 2030 Agenda: Youth4South Edition” orientation training in Istanbul on June 20-22.

More than 20 established young professionals and young officials from national governments, technical cooperation agencies and related sectors will learn and exchange views with their peers from other developing countries, adapt and apply South-South and triangular cooperation tools and methods in scaling-up sustainable development solutions in their own community, institution and country contexts. The programme consists of intensive training for the selected young leaders which will consist of interactive sessions, on-site and on-the-job training, and distance learning.

“Youth for South (Y4S): Advanced Young leadership Programme” was launched by UNOSSC, during the Global South-South Development Expo 2017 in Antalya Turkey, in partnership with Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth Office, the Finance Center for South-South Cooperation, the Islamic Conference Youth Forum, FK Norway, IFAD, and UNFPA.

“Training is not our goal. We aim to equip established young leaders from various parts of the globe with tools and methods of SS & TrC, and provide some seed resources and access to our networks, to support their effort in scaling up innovative solutions in promoting sustainable development,” said Ms. Dingding Sun, a Programme Specialist at UNOSSC, coordinating the Youth for South (Y4S) programme.

This summer, the pilot orientation training will cover two thematic areas namely agriculture and rural development, and reproductive health. Kanykei Ergesheva, UN Volunteer working with UNOSSC, was actively involved in program development of the Y4S Programme and is supporting the organization of the orientation training. Additionally, two UN Volunteers are taking part in this event: Luis Espuny, UN Volunteer with OHCHR in Guatemala, and Jasurjon Ibragimov, UN Volunteer from the Project with UNDP Uzbekistan.

“UN Volunteers, together with other participants, will receive practical training to set up the draft plan for individual projects and their implementation within the South-South framework,” Kanykei explains. “It is planned to have several rounds of young activists from different countries focusing on other sectors like peace, climate change, migration and others to transfer solutions addressing challenges they face back home.”

UNV also provides support for this multi-agency initiative and hopes more UN Volunteers will be empowered to bring transformational change by promoting the adoption and implementation of South-South solutions through the “South-South & Triangular Cooperation in Implementing the 2030 Agenda: Youth4South Edition”
